Sacramento - Tahoe Region

Explore inland California, from Sacramento to the High Sierra. From the political power center of California to the near-empty wilderness in the High Sierra to the all-season playground of Lake Tahoe, this region presents many contrasts. The largest airport serving the region is Sacramento International Airport. There is a smaller airport in South Lake Tahoe for visitors to Lake Tahoe.

For local travel information about this region, go to the Top Destinations section and explore Historic Gold Country or Lake Tahoe Area pages. There, you will find accommodations, scenic drives, restaurants and information on recreation.

California's Central Valley extends into the Sacramento Valley, a wide flat region of farms, river wetlands, small towns and a growing population of new communities. As you drive east, rolling hills dotted with ranches slowly becomes the Sierra Foothills. Evergreen forests take over as the elevation increases and town size shrinks in the mountains.

Between the valley and the deep forests, miners in the 1800's combed the hills and streambeds searching for, and often finding and depleting, mineral riches. The history of the Gold Rush has been preserved in a number of State Parks and former mining towns, including Nevada City and Sutter Creek.
