Santa Cruz California

Santa Cruz surfers wear wetsuits most of the year here but it is definitely a dressed-down beach town for everyone else. There is the famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk old-time amusement park with rides and arcades right on the beach. Families flock to Santa Cruz on weekends and in the summer for swimming and the Boardwalk. They have kept the 1911 wooden carousel, a 1924 wooden roller coaster and a pipe organ, now mixed with modern thrill rides.

The city claims the nickname "Surf City" for obvious reasons.

Up on the surrounding hills, the University of California Santa Cruz adds the intellectual element to what is now a college town.  The downtown is worth exploring on foot, as well as the coastside trails.  This is a great place for cycling – either in town or on the many roads in hills.  Away from the crowds at the beach, the wooded coastal mountain areas surrounding Santa Cruz are full of State Parks, private campgrounds, cabins and trails.
