Traveling north or south on Highway 99, most visitors are just
passing through. It is pretty hot, dry and flat from Fresno to
Bakersfield. Many travelers are headed south to Los Angeles or east to
the mountains in and around Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.
These adjoining parks are the uncrowded alternative to
Yosemite. The lower elevations are chaparral and oak foothills. Higher
up on the western slopes, there are green meadows, waterfalls, deeply
forested wilderness, granite peaks, including the highest peak in the
lower 48 (Mt. Whitney), and hidden sequoia groves. With three major
river systems and extensive trails, this region offers a huge variety
of outdoor experiences.
